A cholesteatoma is a small cyst in the ear that grows from skin cells in the wrong place. Children can be born with a congenital cholesteatoma, or they can develop an acquired cholesteatoma from long-standing ear disease. Removal of the cyst is done in the operating room under microscopic visualization.
